CHAPTER THIRTEEN

levi

We finish picking up the pieces of strewn clothes, throwing them in our bags, and I grab them and throw them over my shoulder. We walk out the door and to the elevator, and the whole time, she’s silent. When we get in and the doors close, I close the space between us and take her hand with my free one. Hers is clammy and tight, but I wriggle my way into it. I lace our fingers together and bend down to kiss the top of her head.

“You okay?” I ask.

She’s chewing on the tip of her thumbnail, staring blankly at the door. She doesn’t answer, so I nudge her gently.

“Hey,” I say again. She jumps.

“Hmm?”

“You okay?” I ask her. “Look, if you’re not comfortable with it, we don’t have to say anything yet. I was just thinking that if I’m planning on, you know, courting you,” I say, tickling her side and making her smile, “your brother—my best friend—deserves to know. I guess I just thought the earlier we tell him, the less likely it is that he will try to murder me.”

She smiles and shakes her head, then leans it back against the wall of the elevator.

“I think you’re right,” she says. “If we don’t say anything now, and something…happens…between us…”

I lean down and leave a soft kiss on her lips.

“Something’s happening, baby,” I tell her. “You just haven’t admitted it to yourself yet.”

The door dings as the car slows, and I look back at her.

“Now? Or never?” I ask.

She takes a deep breath, smiles, and interlocks her hand with mine again.

“Now it is,” she says just as the doors open. I lead her out into the lobby, following the hall down toward the breakfast room. In the corner of the dining area sits my idiot best friend with three plates in front of him and two glasses of juice. He’s chomping away, minding his own business, unaware of the bomb that’s about to be dropped on him.

Truth is, I'm not really afraid to talk to Tyson about it. He’s protective, but not in the unrealistic, my-sister-wears-a-chastity-belt, bring-me-a-dowry kind of way. He just wants what’s best for her.

But as we get closer and closer to him, I suddenly feel my nerves kicking in.

What if I’m not what’s best for her?

His eyes find us, then our interlocked hands, and I realize it’s too late to go back now.

We make it to his table, and he’s completely frozen. His eyes move from me, to her, to our hands, back to me.

“H-hey…guys…” he says, his eyebrows knitting together. The half-eaten piece of bagel in his hand drops to one of the plates in front of him, and he leans back in his chair. “What’s…uh…what’s going on?” he asks.

I feel her grip on me tighten, and she looks up at me. I swallow and face my friend.

“So, uh…I think your sister and I are going to start seeing each other. And we just wanted to be upfront with you about it,” I say, trying to hide the fact that I’m at all nervous.
